I’m into scented candles year-round, but especially during the fall and winter. The aromas add a little bit of personality to my home, plus the visual of dancing lights after sunset can somehow conjure up either a calming or festive vibe, depending on whether I’m alone or entertaining.
A few years ago, I read how bad paraffin wax candles are – and all of my candles were exactly that. Made from a byproduct of petroleum, paraffin wax leaves a lot of soot behind when it’s burned. I was wiping black gunk off of the candle vessels every time I used them. And I’ve found that if a candle label doesn’t say what kind of wax is used, it’s probably paraffin. If it were made of a more expensive speciality wax, for sure they would tout that on the label.
So I started exploring candles beyond the confines of the typical mall stores, and found several well worth the upgrade. But I have a favorite. It’s not the only top-quality candle brand by any stretch, but I love this particular one so much, it’s getting the spotlight today.
The Fernweh Editions Roaring Fireplace Soy Candle sits in a chic glass tumbler, hand poured in small batches by experienced candlemakers. Both candle and the elegant box it comes in are made in the U.S. The soy-coconut wax blend is a creamy color because it isn’t dyed. So it’s clean burning and attractive, but here’s what really makes it special. The nuanced smell is unbelievable, exactly like a fireplace, a fireplace in a five-star mountain lodge to be more specific. (I’ve been to one, so I know that smell, but that’s a story for another day.) And the wick is wooden, and it crackles! So this candle smells and sounds like the real thing.
I have a wood burning fireplace. I will never use it, because everyone who has one and uses it tells me it’s a hassle and a mess. So last winter I lit this delightful candle right in the fireplace, which I had cleaned out and painted white. I was tickled. It’s a decent size candle, 11 oz. with 110 hours burn time. I only wish they made it in a big three-wick version.
Fernweh cleverly groups their candles into destination editions. Roaring Fireplace is a New England Edition, along with Orchard Harvest and Winter Pines. They also offer France, London Town, Pacific Island, Mediterranean Garden, and Alaskan Forest editions.
